Studies have shown that teeth continue to shift and move throughout our entire lives regardless of whether you’ve had orthodontic treatment. To prevent this movement from occurring, retainers are essential. At Hawkesbury Orthodontics, we provide two types of retainers to all of our patients once they have completed their Braces or Invisalign treatment. We also offer permanent retainers and removable retainers as an option for new patients who have had orthodontic treatment in the past and are looking for ways to prevent their teeth from moving.

Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers (or permanent) are a crucial component of modern orthodontics that is provided to all patients who complete orthodontic treatment at Hawkesbury Orthodontics. These retainers are a discreet and effortless way for you to ensure that your teeth do not shift once you complete your braces or Invisalign treatment.

The front six teeth are the most likely to move out of all the teeth in the mouth. For this reason our ergonomically designed fixed retainers are attached behind these front teeth – both at the top and the bottom of the mouth. Each fixed wire retainer is created from a 3D scan of your teeth towards the end of your treatment. The wire is then attached to each tooth in a way that mimics the natural contour of the front teeth. We use the same material used for fillings to ensure durability and achieve a natural tooth colour.

Clear Removable Retainers

Removable retainers are worn over the teeth similar to a mouthguard (but much more thin and discreet). Every patient will receive a set of removable retainers once they complete orthodontic treatment at Hawkesbury Orthodontics. Removable retainers help to keep both your front and your back teeth straight, and are a second layer of protection to prevent your teeth from moving. They also help to maintain the shape of your post-orthodontics smile (e.g. if you started with a crowded and narrow smile and finished with a wide rounded smile, this is something your clear retainers would protect.)

The removable retainers we use are custom-made for each patient and are fabricated from a durable clear plastic. These retainers are created in house so that our patients are able to have them right after their braces are removed or right after they complete Invisalign treatment.
